Last Call For FreeWill

Sagittarius Horoscope for week of December 31, 2009

You Sagittarians may wander farther and wider than the other signs of the zodiac, and you may get itchier when required to stay in one place too long, but you still need a sense of belonging. Whether that comes from having a certain building where you feel comfortable or a wilderness that evokes your beloved adventurousness or a tribe that gives you a sense of community, you thrive when you're in regular touch with a homing signal that keeps you grounded. According to my analysis, 2010 will be prime time for you to find or create or renew your connection to a source that serves this purpose well.

Having had a recent glimpse in the world that will never be mine makes me long for the world that is meant to be mine. Something, somewhere must receive me. I don't know what or where now, but I will keep looking.

Almost There!

My younger brother just joined Facebook!

Of course, the real sign of impending doom is if Sempai Mike started going on the Internet. But I digress.

Need to show Bro the ropes.

It Comes Down To The LAST Scrimmage

This weekend is the final regular season set in the National Football League. While the six teams of the NFC playoffs are set, it still needs to be decided which teams play each other. Meanwhile, there are seven contenders in the AFC for two playoff slots, and all that will be decided Sunday.

Being the Steelers fan that I am, I will need to watch this intently. For the Steelers to make the playoffs, not only do they have to win their game against the Dolphins in Miami...

They need the Patriots to eliminate the Texans (likely), and/or...

The Raiders to eliminate the Ravens (perhaps a 30% likelihood?), and/or...

The Chiefs to eliminate the Broncos (not frickin' likely).

And even if the majority of the above happens, the Steelers can still be knocked out if...

The Jets beat the Bengals in prime-time.

But that last game is probably the only game I'll be likely to actually see, as here the expected televised games will be:

The Colts at Buffalo.

The Falcons at the Bucs.

And the Titans (boo hiss!) at Seattle.

I hate the TV here.

Fact Check

Dad wanted me to check the Blue Book values on cars over at Yahoo. So his old Dodge truck, well, it's pretty far down. Our neighbor's Versa--that's only lost a couple grand from its MSRP. But when he asked me to check on Moonshine, I told him "I want to be put on record: I'm happy with my car, and if I could keep it running and in my possession long enough for it to qualify for Antique plates, I'd be plenty satisfied." It ain't for sale.

And that's the facts.

Christmas After Christmas

An Update From Last Week. (Yes, all the words had to be capitalized. So there.)

Generous relative's check went to the bank today, and while it wasn't enough to blow out the mortgage, it took it down to three payments from finality. In March, Rather Manor will belong only to the Bierces.

Another friend will help us upgrade our computer hardware through a gift of his. The actual deed will be weeks away, and I'll need to consult with the staff at Computer King. King Kong may become Son of Kong, or maybe Toho Kong...and Mum's No-Name Mark II may be completely unrecognizable after we're through with it. With obsolescence a looming concrete crash barrier in our path, we need to drill it a new one or else.

More to come.

These Weird Weekends...I Can't Deal.

Since Friday was Christmas, it felt like a Sunday, and since I was in close proxmity of my sister, I caught her malady of Monday for the following week, which I suffered Saturday morning. Only I'm looking at Monday now. But will it be a Monday-strength Monday, or just a Holiday-depleted Monday? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

If there's any good to come of this, it might mean that my sister won't suffer from Monday today in New Orleans, where she is vacationing.

Dispatches From The Land Of My Subconscious Mind

Got the facts from my dreams. In another reality, inhabited with another version of my being, today is my birthday, not the 15th. My wife surprised me with a birthday party at our home, with all of our friends and family attending.

I don't know who she is in this world. I don't know if she even exists here, or if so, whether our paths had ever crossed.

The home seemed familiar but it wasn't Peachtree, and CERTAINLY wasn't Rather Manor.

In that other world, I am successful in the ways that matter here. My glimpse into the other side was too brief to see what dark clouds went into the silver lining or the golden year.

But I have this intuitive thought: however jealous I may be of my other self's life, that other fellow must be jealous of mine in equal measure. So I need to know, S-Prime, what is it that you can't do that I can? What dreams of yours do I need to make true in this world? I have a New Year's Resolution coming, and I can give it to you to fill in the blank. My intuition tells me this is vitally important.

To me it's been a bit of both this year...but for me the holidays still aren't over yet.

Meanwhile, I see there's a newbie reading my LJ today. Everybody, say "Hi" to [info]dizzy_spin! Welcome and make yourself comfortable.

Why I Did What I Did On Facebook This Week

Twice, I put up song quotes that probably seemed obscure to everybody. I didn't know how prophetic they would turn out to be.

They were from the Stevie Nicks' song "Blue Lamp", which was included on the soundtrack to the animated movie Heavy Metal. I'd have to see the movie again to find the on-screen context, but the off-screen context, and its parallels to my own life now, are worth explaining.

When Stevie wrote the song, she was arguably the most successful woman in the world of rock music. She achieved superstardom in the space of about five years since joining Fleetwood Mac. But this success also forced her to take a hard look at what really mattered in her life. She found herself at the same place a lot of "adult children" find themselves in regard to family relations; the need for love that isn't coddling, the need for freedom that isn't abandonment; the need for a more level relationship with one's parents.

This is what "Blue Lamp" is about, although it is, in another perspective, a Christmas song. So often these familial relationship troubles come to crises over the holidays, and so often people can't see the holidays as a time of joy but as an impending storm of raw emotions.

For many years, I was problematic when it came to family reunions. I'm trying to be more relaxed about it now and not as anxious...but it takes some effort. Sometimes it's a very necessary thing to drop being an adult for a day or two and go back to "Mama's Little Girl" or "Chip Off The Old Block" to remind your heart who you are--and who really loves you.
